Dr Julian Eaton

Assistant Professor

Julian Eaton is a public health psychiatrist, an Assistant Professor at LSHTM, and Mental Health Director for the NGO CBM Global. CBM has a focus on promoting greater access to health care services, social inclusion, and realisation of rights for people with mental illnesses and psychosocial disabilities, focused mainly on poor and marginalised communities. This includes supporting service user organisations and broader civil society, to promoting participation in processes of policy and legislation development, and engaging with Governments and other service providers to strengthen mental health systems and improve access to care. He lived and worked for many years in West Africa, initially in Nigeria, and more recently in Togo.

He has published on issues relating to mental health in low income countries, and human rights. He is a member of the Lancet Commission on Global Mental Health, and contributes in an advisory capacity to many other initiatives including the Movement for Global Mental Health, Mental Health Innovations Network, the Cochrane Collaboration Global Mental Health group, the WHO’s mental health work. His current research includes integrating mental health into primary health care in Nigeria (mhSUN), and developing effective models of supporting people with severe mental illness in community settings in Africa, using co-production methods (SUCCEED).
