Launch of King’s Global Health Institute

15 May 2018

King’s Global Health Institute (KGHI) is a new interdisciplinary centre for research, education and training, working to a new Global Health agenda. The Institute is the voice for Global Health at King’s, and the focal point for the large academic community of Global Health researchers and students. KGHI embodies King’s commitment to Global Health and will catalyse and champion high-impact interdisciplinary research, focused on improving healthcare in less developed settings. CGMH member Professor Martin Prince is the Director of the Institute.

King’s Global Health researchers work in mental, palliative, surgical, ageing, cancer, dental, maternal and newborn healthcare, and the impacts of conflict and environment on health. Healthcare delivery, health system strengthening and workforce development are key priority themes running through all of their programs.

In March 2018 the official launch of King's Global Health Institute was celebrated with an event at Bush House. Guest speakers included Prof Chris Whitty, interim Government Chief Scientist and Scientific Advisor at the Department of Health and Social Care, along with expert panellists from University College London, Imperial College, King’s College London, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Brighton and Sussex Medical School, the Wellcome Trust, and UK Collaborative on Development Sciences.

In the past year, KGHI has been awarded an NIHR Global Health Research Unit, and two Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) research capacity-building programs, comprising £23 million of funding for the period 2017 to 2021. This portfolio of major awards, focusing on health system strengthening for integrated primary care, maternal care, surgical care, cancer and palliative care, includes partners in 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa; Ethiopia, Kenya, The Gambia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Jordan, Palestine, Turkey, and Lebanon.
