The Centre for Global Mental Health is very happy to share the news and celebrate its co-Director, Professor Crick Lund, who has recently been awarded an Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) Science-for-Society Gold Medal in recognition of his exceptional contribution to science and society. ASSAf Science-for-Society Gold Medals are the apex awards of the Academy and the South African science system and are awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements by individuals in scientific thinking for the benefit of society.
Crick was honoured for his outstanding and sustained contribution to public mental health in South Africa and across low- and middle-income countries over nearly three decades. His pioneering research has deepened understanding of the links between mental health, poverty, and social development, directly influencing both global and national policy and practice. His remarkable career exemplifies science in the service of society, advancing mental health equity and sustainable development across the Global South.
The award was presented at the Annual Awards Ceremony held on 30 October 2025. At the ceremony, Crick expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to draw attention to mental health, which remains a neglected priority in global health and development policy, and thanked the teams of research, advocacy and policy collaborators with whom he has worked with over the years.
We are very excited to celebrate this acknowledgement of Crick’s invaluable contribution in the field of Global Mental Health!
